October Week 3 Reflection – Ocean Lau

Ocean's October Week 3 Reflection

Describe your main tasks this week. How did you approach the task? What did you accomplish? What did you learn?

While I was completing a reflection form for last week, I primarily reviewed batches of photos to use on the YRES and U+ Toastmasters websites with another student. Kevin asked us if we could help, and we politely agreed! We were focused on checking if the photos were good in quality, and ensured they were submitted before their respective due dates. From completing this, I learned that with peers, you can complete tasks much faster than you can by yourself!

What strategies do you have for staying on track during work and avoiding distractions when working in a virtual environment? What advice do you have for future co-ops?

Some strategies that I follow, and that I also suggest to future Co-op students is to put your phone and any other unnecessary devices away! These can easily keep you off-track. I keep them out of my reach so I can focus on work and remember the tasks I have to complete. I also hide any other unnecessary tabs; only my tabs for work. Lastly, make sure your workplace is ergonomic– have a chair that seats you properly, and make your screen levelled to your eyes!

How do you measure success in the workplace? What are some standards you have set and feedback you’ve gotten from teachers, supervisors, and coworkers that help guide you?

I consider success when it is something that I, and other workers will be satisfied with. For instance, when I created a brochure with another student, we always made sure we were satisfied with the elements we created. We also checked in with our supervisor to ensure they approved of it. When all of us were satisfied, it became a success! Although standards and requirements differ from everyone, whatever they say is what I must meet and follow.

What soft/hard skills do you feel most confident in, and where do you still need improvement?

I feel most confident in my graphic design skills on Canva, as I have used Canva multiple times to create effective and appealing designs. This is also why I picked my role as a Digital Content Creator to create graphics! On the other hand, there is room for improvement on my communication skills, as I can get quite nervous to speak up. I hope that through my Co-op placement here, I get to be a better communicator!
