What were your initial expectations coming to work at U+, and how have they evolved after your first month on the job?
I had high expectations. Taking on a big role at a company that is well established in York Region gave me the opportunity to apply my skillset and abilities in a professional environment. In just a month, I have already learned so much about talent acquisition, the recruitment process, and far more many parts of HR that I would not get anywhere else. One of the biggest things I’ve enjoyed is the empowerment. Working with so many departments on projects is something that you will not find anywhere else. Your ideas are heard and set into motion, instead of ignored.
What were your first interactions with the team and how have you been working to build relationships between you and your fellow team members?
My first interaction with my team was at Weekend Elite Camp, where I got to meet Carson. Carson made me feel welcome and walked me through the tasks that I was assigned. Through this weekend camp I’ve also worked closely with many volunteers, all of whom have proven to have a passion to learn and grow in a professional space. I also was given the opportunity to meet Catherine at the YRES office. During lunch we were given the opportunity to connect and forge a professional relationship. I got to hear about what drew her into HR and how we could work together to contribute to the future of U+ Education.
How do you envision your term at U+ contributing to your personal and professional growth?
I set it as one of my goals to learn more about Human Resources during my first coop. It was a fantastic choice. In just this last month, I’ve learned and experienced so many things coming from all aspects of work. My term at U+ will contribute in a beautiful way towards my personal and professional growth in many aspects. Firstly, it has helped me step out of my comfort zone. As an introvert, I have been given the opportunity to interact with hundreds of people at job fairs and teach educational workshops to highschool students, something I would have never done before. In a professional way, it has helped show me that I truly have a passion and joy for Human Resources.
Who do you want to show some appreciation to the most and why?
Catherine! She has been super helpful and resourceful, helping me answer questions and assisting me on my projects.
