Aminah's Reflection
What were your initial expectations coming to work at U+, and how have they evolved after your first month on the job?
I tend to hold no expectations when first going into a new experience, just so that I am not too disappointed if they end up being unfulfilled.
However, after my first month here, I have come to see U+ as a fast-paced working environment with a strong emphasis on new ideas and collaboration. The supportive culture and dynamic team are a strong highlight of this work environment. And, I’ve been particularly impressed by the accessibility of resources and the willingness of colleagues to share their knowledge. This experience has already helped me grow on a professional level, and I am eager to continue contributing to the team’s success.
What were your first interactions with the team and how have you been working to build relationships between you and your fellow team members?
My first interaction with the team was during my shadowing with Carson on April 27. During this day, I befriended Vanessa. During my first official working day on May 1, Macy reached out to me on Slack with a question. I am so grateful she did that, because since that first one-to-one interaction, we have also become friends. On May 4, I befriended Vicky due to us being the only people to have come work in-person whilst there was a new round of shadowing going on. I have also become friends with Megan ever since Kevin assigned her (and Macy) to become fellow judges for my high-school marketing co-op students’ weekly deliverables. Finally, on May 22nd, when I was working from the U+ office with Macy and Esa, I had the chance to talk to Esa and befriend her as well.
I have been working to develop these relationships by trying to get to know more about my new friends. Whenever I am working in-person, I try to seek out my friends and work next to them. Doing so definitely makes the day go by faster and feel less daunting!
How do you envision your term at U+ contributing to your personal and professional growth?
I envision my term at U+ contributing to both my personal and professional growth. Professionally, the fast-paced environment will challenge me to develop new skills, enhance my problem-solving abilities, and stay adaptable in the face of constant change. The collaborative culture will allow me to learn from experienced colleagues and gain insights from diverse perspectives. Personally, working at U+ will help me build resilience, improve my communication skills, and boost my confidence in coordinating complex projects. This experience will also provide opportunities to refine my leadership abilities, strengthen my capacity for effective teamwork, and expand my professional network, all of which are essential for my long-term career success.
Who do you want to show some appreciation to the most and why?
I would really like to show my appreciation to Macy. Ever since she reached out to me on that first day, we have stayed in contact almost every day since then. She is such a kind and helpful person, always ready to offer support and guidance. Not to mention, she is a really hard worker! Macy’s dedication and positive attitude have truly made a significant impact on my experience here, and I am truly grateful for her friendship.
