March Week 3 Reflection – Kenneth

Week 3 Reflection

Please share how you feel about the onboarding process. What are some resources that were helpful, and what’s something you’d like to see implemented in the future?

The onboarding process here at U+ Education had a smooth, well structured process that I think was very helpful in introducing me to the environment of work here at U+, company policies, and communication methods. I felt supported and open to the idea of expanding my opportunities, as supervisors were very accepting and open to questions. Some helpful resources I would say are slack, the company policy and SOP documents, OSS for onboarding canva links, and the first few projects we had to understand our role here at U+. Some suggestions for improvement, I would say, is the speed of the onboarding process. The projects were very simple and easy, but I think more important training related to specific roles should be rolled out earlier.

Describe one main task you worked on this week. Who did you work with? How did you approach the task? What did you accomplish?

One task I worked on this week was the budget forecasting and ordering spreadsheet. I worked with my afternoon team, and helped research products of all sorts. At first, I worked and completed rows with capital assets then moved on to office supplies which was the main focus for the afternoon team, to research 130 items by Friday.

What is one big challenge you faced this week? Who did you turn to when you needed support? Describe what you learned and what you would do differently the next time.

One big challenge I faced this week was rescheduling my co-op hours, because I did not know who to talk to about it. So, I messaged Jessica Zou, knowing that she was the head of HR, and talked to my co-op teacher about changing my work schedule on Mondays and Thursdays, since I had track practice on these days. It was a big challenge because I feared not being able to get the amount of hours to pass the course, and I do not think it is a problem anymore. I learned how to be able to communicate with others effectively and pass messages along. Next time, I would first talk to my co-op teacher before messaging Jessica Zou, but Jessica was very helpful in answering my questions, just the process would have taken less time.

What personal motto or guiding principle would you bring with you to your role next week, and how do you see it helping you contribute to our organization’s mission?

For me, the motto “perfect practice makes perfect” is a well-known phrase which encourages 100% effort put into repeated practice, so that skills are practiced in the best way possible. I am excited for the next week, where I plan on bringing this phrase with my role as an Accounting assistant. To be able to enter the physical workplace with an open mind and working with attention to detail. This way, I can deliver quality work, by working correctly and following instructions with precisions which will bring me to mastery, and ensuring this in the future I will be able to contribute to U+ in a meaningful way, and enhance my professional skills.
