December Week 1 Reflection – Vanessa

Vanessa's December Week 1 Reflection

Reflect on your current projects and responsibilities. Are you surprised or satisfied with your contributions so far? Where do you see improvement since the beginning of the term?

For my current projects and responsibilities, although I am happy with what I have contributed, there is always more for me to learn. I get to work with different questions and fresh circumstances every day, which makes me more adaptable. Depending on the circumstances, I’ve learned to strike a balance between providing thorough explanations and I’ve improved my ability to sense the tone of the discussion even when it is online. I am satisfied with my contributions so far as I always strive to go above and beyond on my work to showcase my work ethic. I see those specific improvements through my leadership and responsibility skills.

When thinking of the work that you do, the people you work with, and the outcomes of your projects, what aspect brings you the most fulfillment? Are there any other aspects not mentioned that you want to highlight?

The aspects that bring my the most fulfilment when we are completing new tasks and working together for projects. I am able to see how others work and their ideas which inspire me to improve my own. When working in a group setting for a project or task, I always encourage others to express their ideas which then all together, we are able to create one major idea when everyone has a say and is the best work that everyone can provide. As well as seeing a video come together after editing. It is always refreshing to see the product of a video when it has all come together with all the effects, music and text.

Collaboration is a huge motivational factor in the workplace. Out of the people you’ve worked with at U+, choose a minimum of 3 people to show appreciation to and explain your choice.

The three people I would show appreciation to through collaboration in the workplace would be Erin Tam, Tina Wei and Alina R. They are always there if I ever need help and I know I can always go to them if I have a question or need feedback before submitting something final. They are always willing and always make sure to complete the work that is being given and always give out a hand if I need help. Even through group projects, they continue to show their collaboration in including ideas and always do their fair share of the work.

If you could mentor a new hire, what would you share as the most valuable advice?

The most valuable advice that I would give to someone is being organized. There are many parts that I did not realize through this experience that you need to keep in mind. I would recommend strongly to create a to-do list and have a schedule in place that you check regularly. This would help ensure that there things are being done in a timely manner and are not getting piled up. It is very easy to mix up many tasks or forget what needs to be completed that is why having a list of everything will help as you are able to see everything at hand and go through the list on your shift. Organization is key when having multiple tasks to keep track of which will help in the future as well. Ensure to find a good calendar that is easily accessible and that you continuously update.
