Angelica – January Reflection

My January with U Plus Education

What motivated you to join U+?

I was motivated to join U+ due to the teaching opportunities as well as the chance to immerse myself in a professional environment. In my faculty, it is very hard to find job opportunities aligned with either fields I am in, however, U+ was one of two job opportunities that would have allowed me to further develop and enrich my teaching skills in a variety of settings with multiple age groups, furthering my experience. The role of project coordinator is new to me, and I was very excited to take on multiple roles to challenge myself. I know that many jobs may be similar to Project Coordinator, and so I was motivated to build experience for multiple positions for future job opportunities. In my previous jobs, I was one of a million employees working for the government. With U+ I feel like I would be able to make a visible impact and create more meaningful connections within the organization.

What was your impression of first interactions with the team and the organization’s culture?

During my onboarding process, I came to realize that a smaller corporation offers a tight-knit community that is welcoming and approachable. Although, as my first coop term and first onboarding process, it was a bit overwhelming, I found my coworkers to be very friendly and reliable, as they were all willing to help and create an effective and efficient team. Furthermore, thanks to Kevin’s invitation to the Christmas/End-of-Year celebration, I was able to familiarize myself with the organization and the previous coops, and it got me excited to join the team and make a difference. Meeting the previous team and learning more about their roles helped me tremendously with getting to know what would be expected of me and my fellow coop students.

How do you envision U+ contributing to your academic and professional growth?
I envision U+ contributing to my maturity and capability within a professional work setting. In my previous positions, I was less supervised, very familiar with policies and my expectations, and eventually got too comfortable in my role as I had been a volunteer training for it for a couple of years before even starting it. So my job experience started to become stagnant and not motivational and was not stimulating any longer. I believe that U+ and my positions will enrich my professional skills, interpersonal skills, and even build on my subpar marketing and business skills, domains I had not really ventured into previously.  Not only will U+ give me experience in fields I aspire to further explore, such as teaching, but other fields I haven’t familiarized myself with yet, such as customer service and marketing, which could be useful for me in the near future.
