Welcome to another week in the lives of our dedicated high school co-ops at U+. In this blog series, Tarlan Kamalian and Jeremiah Campbell share their experiences, challenges, and newfound insights as they contribute to U+’s objectives.

From enhancing online presence to creating promotional flyers, they’re making a significant impact. Join us as we dive into their week to discover how they tackled challenges, honed their skills, and interacted with colleagues and supervisors, shedding light on the professional world and aligning their career goals.

What were the most significant tasks or projects you worked on this week, and how did they contribute to U+'s goals and objectives?

Tarlan Kamalian – Marketing Assistant: I was actively involved in donation campaigns for HS Co-ops, and my contributions played a significant role in advancing U+’s objectives. My responsibilities primarily focused on enhancing YRES’ online presence, both on their Instagram account and website. I provided valuable insights to help them improve these platforms. Additionally, I conducted research to gather local business contact information. This information proved invaluable in enabling U+ to establish connections with local businesses and introduce them to YRES’ donation campaigns, raising awareness of this noble cause and encouraging contributions. Another task I successfully completed was the creation of Winter Programming Flyers for 2024. These flyers effectively promoted U+’s educational events and programs, ensuring that the community was well-informed about the exciting opportunities available.

Jeremiah Campbell – Digital Content Creator: Major projects I have worked on were the story book project ran by Ambika, and currently I am working with the YouTube and tiktok team to make changes  on various social media platform U+ has. I also reviewed U+ ran websites and gave them tips on how they could improve the site etc. These projects I am working on and have worked on helps U+ by improving social media accounts to gain notoriety, as well as adding variety to the website and social account’s. I’ve attended various meeting on discussing what type of content to make as a comeback video or post.

Describe a challenge you encountered during your work this week. How did you approach and overcome this challenge, or what steps did you take to seek assistance and learn from it?

Tarlan Kamalian – Marketing AssistantIn the course of the Community Leader Market Research project, I was assigned the duty of tracking down the YCDSB trustees and finding contact information about them. I faced certain difficulties while trying to gather the essential information. However, I took the initiative to seek help from Kavin, and we joined forces to effectively acquire the necessary location details for the trustee. Kavin reviewed the information I was working on and recommended that I search for the city its located. After following his suggestion, I successfully obtained accurate information. I also verified the information through YCDSB.

Jeremiah Campbell – Digital Content Creator: Not much to write about personally the only challenge I face during this time is balancing the work load  with my school work and the other project given to me by others, even when I am already working on a task.

Reflect on the skills you utilized or developed this week. Which skills were the most important for your tasks, and how do you see them benefiting your future career aspirations?

Tarlan Kamalian – Marketing Assistant:
The primary skills I employed were research skills, which proved essential in locating business information while researching Local Business Contact Information. These skills were also crucial when I searched for YCDSB trustee members and their contact details. In addition, I applied critical thinking to explore alternative methods for enhancing the YRES website and Instagram presence, making the information more valuable. My keen attention to detail was instrumental in identifying opportunities for improving the appearance and information quality on these platforms. I also gained proficiency in technical design skills through my involvement in creating flyers for the Winter 2024 event.

Jeremiah Campbell – Digital Content Creator: Organization, not a massive Improvement but to me it’s huge, I  tend to lose track  of  things easily and during the period of  time I’ve been working here and  attending the meets. I also have been able to balancing my work as best I can  so I can prioritize which task I need to finish first.

What interactions or collaborations with colleagues or supervisors stood out to you this week? How did these interactions enhance your understanding of the workplace and the industry?

Tarlan Kamalian – Marketing Assistant: I had the opportunity to engage in meaningful conversations with both Emily, the marketing lead, and Kavin, who led the York Region Program Project. She assigned me the responsibility of designing the flyers and offered detailed guidance on how to complete the task.  My discussions with Emily allowed me to better understand her and her objectives for me, which ultimately led to the Winter 2024 Flyers project. On the other hand, my interaction with Kavin, who entrusted me with the task of finding YCDSB trustee members, included a discussion about the challenges I faced in locating their whereabouts. Through collaborative efforts, we successfully resolved this issue.

Jeremiah Campbell – Digital Content Creator: Nothing has really stood out to me to be quite honest. I haven’t really noticed anything that has stood out to me at the moment.

Consider any insights or lessons you've gained about U+'s industry or the professional world in general. How do these insights align with your career goals, and do they influence your perspective on your future path?

Tarlan Kamalian – Marketing Assistant: I’ve gained a profound appreciation for the warm and compassionate community within the U+ industry. It’s truly heartening to see how they empathize with the challenges workers face. I admire the relaxed atmosphere and the flexibility in managing work, given the generous deadlines. This environment allows individuals to refine their projects to perfection. In my future endeavors, I aspire to create a similarly enjoyable and engaging work environment. I seek to join a workplace that provides support when necessary and recognizes the responsibilities that come with being a worker. It’s important to me that I maintain a relaxed approach to work, fostering a setting where productivity thrives.

Jeremiah Campbell – Digital Content Creator: Coming into U+ I originally thought I would be doing content creation such as editing videos for posts and I haven’t done anything of the sort yet so I would like to do that because on the co op description my teacher told me that kind of stuff would be here, so it’s kind of a let down on that part other than that don’t really know how to feel about U+, other than the people being nice.

As we conclude this week’s installment of our high school co-op blog series, Tarlan Kamalian and Jeremiah Campbell reflect on their experiences, skills development, and insights gained at U+. Tarlan’s appreciation for a compassionate work environment and her aspiration to create an engaging workplace align with her career goals. Jeremiah’s desire for more hands-on content creation hints at his evolving expectations and highlights the importance of clear communication between co-op students and their mentors.

Their journeys at U+ are only beginning, and their evolving perspectives are sure to shape their paths in the professional world. Stay tuned for more stories of growth and learning in our high school co-op blog series.
