October Week 1 Reflection – Joseph

Joseph's October Week 1 Reflection

Please share how you feel about the onboarding process. What are some resources that were helpful, and what’s something you’d like to see implemented in the future?

I would say my onboarding and training process went pretty well with some minor hiccups, but those were mostly my mistakes as I was still tryna get adjusted to the new environment as this is the first time I ever worked. Some key resources I found useful are the resources in the onboarding website( especially the SOP documents) as this helps me visualize what I can expect when working with Uplus.  What I want to implement in the future is to use my google calendar more often as it has  all the meeting dates and times. I would also like to make a schedule of both my co-op and school assignments to keep myself productive and balance my time better.

Describe your main tasks this week. Who did you work with? How did you approach the task? What did you accomplish?

My main tasks for this week are making Lego robotics presentations  about certain robots. I have 3 other coworkers that work on the same type of tasks, but we are all working separately, and my supervisor is Ms. Christina and Ms Tanya. All the Lego presentations follow the same template, but I change the challenges and the icebreakers for each presentation that I’m doing . The challenges differ depending on what grade the students are with beginners level presentations for grades 1-2  and advanced level presentations for grades 4-5. Making the challenges also depend on the robot as they differ in capabilities and uses, for example the robotic arm would have challenges focused on more physical tasks and there is a limited amount of code you can make.

What is one big challenge you faced this week? Who did you turn to when you needed support? Describe what you learned and what you would do differently the next time.

I would say one big challenge I faced was coming up with challenges on a robot I have never experienced using, for example the Lego robot Rhino. When I was having troubles I would turn to websites and videos explaining the capabilities of Lego rhino, I would also ask other people just as family or other coworkers on what kind of challenges I could make. What I learned from this experience is that it is better to get ideas from a group of people than from one person. This is because you are able to choose from a more variety of things other people suggest and decide which one is the best. Next time I am facing a mental block creatively I will just ask other people for help or use videos.

What are three main skills U+/YRES allowed you to leverage/develop this week? Reflect on how each skill brings value to your professional development and propels you forward in the industry.

The three main skills that U+ develop is  my communication, teamwork, and time management. Communication is valuable in my professional development as it will help me communicate my ideas better and build better relationships with coworkers. teamwork is also valuable as if you are working in a team to be able to understand what the team members want and what the best course of action is for the team. I believe time management is the most valuable skill as time is a very valuable thing to everyone and with time management you can spend that time efficiently and effectively, also with time management skills you are less likely to get distracted as you already are and a main focus on what you’re spending that time on.

What personal motto or guiding principle would you bring with you to your role next week, and how do you see it helping you contribute to our organization’s mission?

One guiding principle I would bring is  to “just get things done before you start the next thing”. I can see this principle helping me contribute as when I start new things I often forget about the previous tasks I would be working on, so instead of working on multiple assignments I’ll just work and finish one of the assignments before completing them. Another principle I would bring is to always do things when to get them not when they are due. This is because when I am given tasks with long due dates I tend to slack off as I believe I could finish the tasks in less time than required. But if I finish my tasks early I am able to work on other assignments and give myself more time to review them.
