May Week 1 Reflection – Nuoheng

Nuoheng's May
Week 1 Reflection

What is the most rewarding part of your job and why?

One of the most rewarding parts of my job as an accounting assistant is learning how to tackle problems when they are initially found overwhelming, whether it’s writing, learning something new, or figuring out complex tasks. Many assume accounting is cold or impersonal, but my role allows me to engage in thoughtful conversations every day. It’s fulfilling to know I can offer clarity, guidance, or even just a bit of encouragement when someone needs it. Helping users feel more confident or empowered, even in small ways, is something that often goes unnoticed but means a lot.

If you could invent a new gadget to make your work easier, what would it be and why?

If I could invent a new work gadget to make life easier, I would choose to invent a Smart Multi-Tasking Desk Assistant. This gadget would combine several tools into one compact device (think of it as a digital assistant, scanner, note-taker, and reminder system all in one!). It would use voice recognition to take notes during meetings or phone calls, scan and organize receipts or documents directly into accounting software, and give friendly reminders for important deadlines or emails. It would even learn my daily work habits to suggest ways to improve productivity. In a role like accounting assistant, where multitasking and organization are key, this tool would save time and reduce stress, allowing me to focus more on problem solving and collaboration, rather than chasing paperwork or switching between multiple apps.

How do you unwind after a long day at work?

My favourite way to wind down after a busy day at work is by going to sleep or simply taking a nap. I find that rest allows me to reset my mind, calm my thoughts, and regain a sense of balance. Sleep not only helps improve my focus and mood, but also supports my overall health and immunity. It’s a time where I don’t have to worry about anything, like the world is slowing down, and I can just focus on resting. It’s my personal time to recharge, and it always helps me feel ready to take on the next day.

How has your perception of professionalism or the workplace changed since starting your co-op placement?

Since starting my co-op, my perspective on professionalism has changed a lot. I used to believe that work had to be completely silent, with no music, no chatting, dressed formally, just strict focus on the tasks and projects we were assigned. I still remember my first day in the office on a Wednesday. Everyone was quietly working on their own tasks, and there was little to no communication. It felt a bit intimidating at first. However, as time went on and our supervisors started gathering us for meetings and icebreaker games, we began to connect more. We slowly got to know each other, and the work environment became more collaborative and comfortable. I realized that professionalism isn’t just about being serious or quiet, but it’s also about being respectful, communicative, and building positive relationships with my team members.
