March Week 3 Reflection – Ellen

Ellen's March
Week 3 Reflection

Please share how you feel about the onboarding process. What are some resources that were helpful, and what’s something you’d like to see implemented in the future?

During the process of my onboarding, I found that the tasks helped me get a better understanding of company expectations for work ethics and resources that are to be used. Resources like the onboarding task and following along with the videos provided, I was able to get hands-on experience with tools that I’ve used in the past like Canva for school assignments, and get an understanding of the many functions they have available that I had overlooked in the past. One thing that I would like to implement in the future is additional training videos for tips & tricks for applications like Google Sheets similar to the current training video for “Canva Use,” where it talks about some shortcut keys & functions that can improve work efficiency.

Describe one main task you worked on this week. Who did you work with? How did you approach the task? What did you accomplish?

One of the tasks that I have worked on this week is reviewing the websites of U+ Education’s 5 branches and commenting on suggestions for any adjustments that can be made to improve the level of quality of each site. This task was mainly an individual assignment, but I would regularly check the Slack channel to ask or refer to the questions that were asked by my department members for clarification about functions and formatting. Through the active communication between everyone within the channel, I was able to slowly get the hang of the task at hand and have improved my efficiency to begin completing my task before the deadline.

What is one big challenge you faced this week? Who did you turn to when you needed support? Describe what you learned and what you would do differently the next time.

I haven’t faced any challenges this week, but if I were to have the need to ask any questions or clarifications for the material that I’m provided, I would firstly check the Slack channels if anyone else had the same question. If not, then I wouldn’t hesitate to use the message channel for general questions or directly send a message & email to my supervisors for personal inquiries.

What personal motto or guiding principle would you bring with you to your role next week, and how do you see it helping you contribute to our organization’s mission?

One motto that I want to continue to follow is that “great things never come from comfort zones.” I’ve always been someone who would do my best to avoid any social confrontations and always found loopholes around them by having others speak on my behalf. Unfortunately, in the real world, if you want to achieve any of your goals, you must step out of your comfort zone, and I’ve learned it the hard way after experiencing the consequences of getting a low grade for an assignment that led to my overall average significantly dropping only because “I was too shy to ask for help.” Ever since that incident, it has become a learning experience for me, and I have been slowly trying to actively communicate with my supervisors for any questions, whether major or minor, to prevent history from repeating itself for me and hopefully others as well to enhance their learning.
