January Week 1 Reflection – Ocean

Ocean's January
Week 1 Reflection

What movie/book (standalone or series) best represents your co-op experience at U+? Explain why.

Nothing comes to my mind particularly, but I suppose The Wild Robot is a way I could represent my experience. It is a challenging movie that shows how it takes a lot of courage, patience, and work in order to complete tasks. For example, Roz the Robot tries her best to complete multiple tasks as she ventures throughout the forest. This is much akin to completing tasks at U+ Education, which takes time and patience!

What learning and/or skill development took place on the job that you wouldn’t have experienced in school?

You do not receive the experience of working with other colleagues, and especially having that work become displayed to other people to see. Compared to completing work in school, it is only for your students/teachers to assess (typically). However, when it comes to a job, you are creating work that is potentially being displayed to the world. This displays some valuable experience you do not get anywhere else.

Did your understanding of the world of work change as a result of your participation in co-op this semester? How so/why not?

For sure. Knowing that I now work at an actual company with a completely different environment I am new to, it is without a doubt I have to work my hardest to support the company. I also work knowing that I am actually providing real impacts to many people, and adding experience to my resume. People will recognize me as a worker, especially my supervisors and Co-op teacher who are constantly evaluating my performance as I work. As such, I need to prove my best in this environment and increase my participation.

Your personal values shape the needs you require in a workplace and motivates you to make certain career decisions. With your U+ experience, what are the top three values that must be satisfied when you consider a future workplace? (For example, but not exclusively: advancement; altruism; autonomy; creativity; detailed work; leadership; fast-paced; friendships; high salary; problem-solving; solitary work; teamwork; supportive supervisor; variability/change; work/life balance.) Briefly explain why you chose those three values.

1. Work/life balance – On top of having a job in a future workplace comes with having to balance all of the personal stuff you have in life. A good workplace should consider everyone’s balance and make sure no one is overwhelmed or flocked with too much work.
2. Teamwork – It is also important to have collaborators and people to work on projects with. These are people you can look up to, work with, and ask for feedback from. They are key to having an efficient and supportive workplace.
3. Creativity – Lastly, as someone who is interested in being creative and bringing unique ideas, a creative workplace ensures lots of variety and interest to being committed to working.
