Student to Web Developer – Week 4: Crafting User-Friendly Experiences

In the ever-evolving world of web development, each week brings a new set of challenges, discoveries, and opportunities. As high school co-op students diving into the realm of web development at U+, our experiences are shaping our understanding of the digital landscape.

This week, we tackled critical resizing and spacing issues, brought creativity to life, and navigated the intricacies of working remotely. Our contributions to the “Gifted People Service” website and the Annual Volunteer Appreciation page for YRES are vital steps in ensuring a seamless online experience. Join us in this week’s journey as we reflect on our roles as web development assistants.

What were the most significant tasks or projects you worked on this week, and how did they contribute to U+'s goals and objectives?

Muhammad Taha Ghaffar – Web Developer Assistant:

In the past week, I primarily focused on resolving critical resizing and spacing issues on the “Gifted People Service” website hosted on the Wix platform. By ensuring a visually consistent and user-friendly design, I contributed to U+’s goal of providing an optimal online experience for its clients. My role as a web development assistant directly aids in upholding U+’s online presence and helps create a positive impression for its target audience.

Anthony Shi – Web Developer Assistant:

My most significant task this week was the Annual Volunteer Appreciation page on YRES. Where I implemented the design given onto the website. I think this contributes since it is giving back to the community and people who have volunteered and helped YRES. I think this contributes to the goals since it rewards community involvement and gives the community a reason why they should participate in the community.

Describe a challenge you encountered during your work this week. How did you approach and overcome this challenge, or what steps did you take to seek assistance and learn from it?

Muhammad Taha Ghaffar – Web Developer Assistant:

One significant challenge I faced this week involved resizing an image on the home page of the “Gifted People Service” website. I tried my best to fix the issue by cropping the image and even trying to resize it or zoom in but It just wouldn’t work out. I hope to find a way to fix this issue next week and learn something new about image placement.

Anthony Shi – Web Developer Assistant:

A challenge I encountered while doing my tasks, was struggling with implementing things without changing them too much. I overcame this by not limiting myself too much. Such as if I couldn’t replicate the design perfectly I would try to find a different way of implementing it with the same idea and execution. Especially when I was designing the mobile site version. Since the designs were extremely difficult going from a desktop version to a mobile version, I overcame this by trying all of what I could do and then contacting Hugo for assistance since I wasn’t sure how after trying all that I had known.

Reflect on the skills you utilized or developed this week. Which skills were the most important for your tasks, and how do you see them benefiting your future career aspirations?

Muhammad Taha Ghaffar – Web Developer Assistant:

During this week, I relied heavily on problem-solving and attention to detail skills in my role as a web development assistant. Problem solving was essential when troubleshooting the website. I had to analyze the problem, identify its root causes, and devise effective solutions. Attention to detail was crucial in ensuring that every element on the website was perfectly aligned, enhancing user experience.

Anthony Shi – Web Developer Assistant:

I utilized a lot of independent work, design, and web developing as a whole. I think the most important skill that I had during this task would be the experience I had and was gaining as well as independent work. The more experience I had working on a site the more I slowly started to work faster and faster since I understood everything more. My independent work was very useful since my position is fully virtual. I don’t have anyone monitoring me. So the discipline I had to not procrastinate and just slowly focus on work was very important.

What interactions or collaborations with colleagues or supervisors stood out to you this week? How did these interactions enhance your understanding of the workplace and the industry?

Muhammad Taha Ghaffar – Web Developer Assistant:

This week, I had the opportunity to collaborate with my fellow team members and supervisor. Their guidance and expertise were invaluable as they shared best practices and insights specific to the Wix platform. This interaction enhanced my understanding of the workplace by demonstrating the importance of knowledge sharing and teamwork.

Anthony Shi – Web Developer Assistant:

My interactions with Hugo changed my perspective. Since in my mind, anyone who works above you is strict and is constantly telling you to do better. But not only was Hugo nice but understanding. He talked in a calm manner and made sure to keep up and see if I needed help while I was working.  This really showed me that a workplace isn’t always strict and can have the same effectiveness.

Consider any insights or lessons you've gained about U+'s industry or the professional world in general. How do these insights align with your career goals, and do they influence your perspective on your future path?

Muhammad Taha Ghaffar – Web Developer Assistant:

Working at U+ has provided valuable insights into the web development industry. It has reinforced the significance of continuous learning and adaptability in a rapidly evolving field. The emphasis on quality and user experience aligns with my career goals of becoming a proficient web developer.

These insights have underscored the importance of collaboration, as success often depends on teamwork and knowledge-sharing. I inspire to use what I have learned to help myself improve and grow as an individual.

Anthony Shi – Web Developer Assistant:

I think the lessons I learned this week will help my future career path since I developed skills that will be very useful in the future. Such as communication and discipline. Since these skills are useful in almost all career paths. Especially for the career path I am looking for.

As the week comes to a close, we’ve encountered challenges, harnessed essential skills, and fostered valuable collaborations. Problem-solving and attention to detail were our guiding lights, empowering us to refine the digital world. Interactions with our colleagues and supervisor have emphasized the significance of teamwork and approachability in the professional world.

Our experiences align with our aspirations, emphasizing the importance of continuous learning and adaptability in web development. Working at U+ has painted a clear picture of the industry and the qualities needed for a successful career path. We’re excited to take these lessons into the future as we continue our journey from student to web developer.
