Catherine's Reflection

What were your initial expectations coming to work at U+, and how have they evolved after your first month on the job?
Initially coming to U+ I had no expectations around HR work and was going into this kind of blind. However for the camp part, I expected a similar experience to my previous times as a camp counsellor. I came into working at U+ knowing and hoping it would be a learning experience, which it definitely has been. Since I’ve begun, I’ve learned a lot about HR processes and am excited to continue. I expect to continue learning and have narrowed my expectations down to being able to exercise and build on my new skills. I also expect to be continuously challenged in this workplace
What were your first interactions with the team and how have you been working to build relationships between you and your fellow team members?
My first interactions were with Tobin and Macy virtually as I knew them prior to joining U+ but since then I’ve built friendships and acquaintances with many of my fellow co-ops. My first in person interaction was at Stonebridge where I talked with Megan, Eric, Christina, Elizabeth and Ina. We’ve built a solid relationship as team members at work and friendships as we share many of the same tasks and have been there to support each other. To strengthen my relationship with everyone else, I’ve tried to be social when we all work in person and talk to new people each time.
How do you envision your term at U+ contributing to your personal and professional growth?
I knew coming into my co-op term that I would learn a lot at U+ and it has been transformative so far. I can see that it will contribute to my personal growth within the sphere of letting myself be more open to improvising and being open to uncertainty. As for professional growth, I believe being a co-op here will really help me become more tolerant of a fast moving environment. Knowing how to apply feedback and work on your own have also been huge factors of working at U+ that has already caused me to see some changes in the way that I work professionally.
Who do you want to show some appreciation to the most and why?
I think Tanya has been someone who really deserves a shoutout for all that she has done. She has been extremely supportive and helpful in every step of the way and extremely willing to answer questions. Her handover document has also been super helpful in my first month as everything is detailed and step by step.
