July Reflection – Zhenyan

Zhenyan's Reflection

Now that camp has officially started, describe one challenge and how you overcame it during the transition to camp duties.

While the first week of camp was tough, the switch from Intermediate to Senior during the second week was an even greater challenge. Although the first day was tiring, my adaptability helped me adjust to the teaching style that works with the older kids and quickly understand how to control the class. I learned that older kids tend to be louder and are less willing to participate in certain activities, which me and my co-counsellors worked around by awarding their behaviour and continuous participation with stickers.

Describe your top 3 camp moments thus far and why they stand out to you.

Without all the amazing counsellors at Stonebridge, I wouldn’t have the willpower and motivation to power through these tough weeks of camp. One notable moment from camp so far was the candy salad that a lot of the counsellors contributed to and made as a snack and memory for all.
All the intermediate 4 kids that say hi to me in the hallways: Since being switched to a seniors class, my old intermediate class has called out my name every time they see me in the hallways. It makes me feel loved and valued knowing that our one short week together has made such a huge impact on their camp experience. I will continue to visit them during my breaks!
A graduating camper gave me a thank you card with a gift: It was such a cute little surprise to receive a gift from a camper, because it shows that they really do appreciate our efforts as a counsellor and wish the best for us in the remaining weeks of camp.

Being a month into camp, how do you see the summer camp experience contributing to your personal and professional growth?

Even though it has been a month, I find that each day at camp presents new and unexpected challenges. This means that I have to learn to adapt quickly, be creative, problem solve, and adjust plans as needed. For example, when campers are unenthusiastic about planned activities or finish an activity early (happens a lot in the senior class), I would have to come up with a creative way to keep the class engaged. These qualities are really important to have in not just camp but also in broader professional settings as well.

Please nominate someone who deserves the employee of the month award and explain why briefly.

Daphne – for working so hard even while on placement and consistent creating amazing content. Emily – for being an amazing co-counsellor that has helped me tremendously and made camp a lot more enjoyable
