Esa's Reflection
Now that summer camp is coming to a close, explain 3 key takeaways from the experience? How will you apply it in the future?
Three key takeaways from being a site leader are the importance of strong leadership, good communication, and handling conflicts calmly. Leading the team and keeping everyone on the same page taught me a lot about making quick decisions and motivating people. Talking with parents, staff, and students helped me learn how to communicate clearly and build trust. Dealing with conflicts showed me the value of staying patient and finding solutions that work for everyone. These experiences will help me in the future to be a better leader, connect with people, and manage challenges more smoothly.
Describe one of the biggest challenges you faced, how you overcame it, and what you learned from it.
One of the toughest challenges I faced as a site leader was dealing with angry parents. They were upset about different things, and it often came down to misunderstandings or not knowing what to expect. I handled it by really listening to them, staying calm, and showing I understood their frustration. Instead of just brushing them off, I worked with them to find solutions that were fair for everyone. This experience taught me the importance of staying patient, communicating clearly, and finding a middle ground when things get heated.
To close off the term on a high note, what were 3 highlights from your time at U+?
To close off the term on a high note, three highlights from my time at U+/YRES were connecting with the staff, building relationships with the students, and, of course, the freezie day. Working closely with the staff created a strong team dynamic that made each day enjoyable and productive. Getting to know the students and seeing them grow over the summer was incredibly rewarding. And freezie day was just plain fun—it was a simple but memorable way to bring everyone together and enjoy a treat. These moments made the experience special and left me with great memories.
What is some advice/tip that you would offer to future staff?
Build strong relationships: Take the time to connect with your fellow staff and students. This makes teamwork smoother and helps create a supportive environment.
Stay flexible: Things won’t always go as planned, so be ready to adapt. Embrace changes, and don’t be afraid to think on your feet. It will probably work out!
Communicate clearly: Whether with students, staff, or parents, clear communication is key. Be open, approachable, and listen as much as you talk.
Enjoy the experience: Camp can be hectic, but remember to have fun and make the most of it. Your energy and attitude will set the tone for everyone else.
Please nominate someone who deserves the employee of the month award and explain why briefly. You can nominate more than one person.
I’d like to nominate Carson. He consistently supported the team, engaged with students in a meaningful way, and handled tough situations with professionalism and care. His dedication and positive attitude made a real difference throughout the term.
